THC percentage is the worst measure of cannabis we've ever agreed to use. Here's what we measure instead.
The three failure modes
boof
noun · legacy jargon
Poor quality cannabis. Appropriately named — the term traces back to a prison product smuggled in a less-than-flattering manner, degrading under the subprime conditions it was subject to.
In practice it arrives three ways, and we've seen all three sold as premium.
Passing microbial panels that were never designed to catch what's actually there. Powdery mildew is an obligate biotroph — it can't be cultured, and it doesn't grow on the plates a total yeast-and-mold count uses. Botrytis looks like the same story. PCR catches both. It usually isn't required.
Seeded, stressed, light-starved, or chased so hard for yield that everything else got optimized away. The plant tells you long before the lab does. People stop reading it.
The one nobody wants to talk about. Processing doesn't clean a plant — it concentrates it. Dry too fast and you've stripped the terpenes you spent four months building. Cure wrong and you've made hay. Extract from material that was never clean and you've concentrated the problem roughly 10x, while the cannabinoids only came along 2 to 5x.
We've never met a team that decided to produce hot garbage on purpose. Budgets, talent gaps, process drift and margin-destroying deals do it for them.
The chemistry
Researchers have counted at least 104 cannabinoids among 545 compounds in this plant, with more than 150 reported. State potency panels require as few as four. Commercial labs commonly run 11 to 17.
And cannabinoids are only the opening act. Terpenes drive the experience people actually come back for. Flavonoids and the minor metabolites — the ones barely anybody is measuring yet — are where the interesting work happens over the next decade. That's the chemistry of the plant, and it's a great deal more intelligent than the number we print on the jar.
Chasing a THC sticker optimizes away everything you didn't measure. Colorado retail flower labeled 20.27–24.10% THC averaged 14.98% when researchers tested it independently, and reported results bunch up right above 20% — exactly where the market pays more.
We measure potency as total cannabinoids. Then we read the terpene profile, the flavonoids, and whatever else the analysis can see.
What your panel misses
4 CCR § 15724 requires THC, THCa, CBD and CBDa.

What we handle
The receipt. Good Weed ran zero pesticides and zero failed pesticide tests across 2017–2019, on $235 a month in IPM — beneficials only. Six to fifteen full cycles on the same no-till soil, no till and no flush. Our founder's operation, on his own P&L. Historical figures, not client results.
